Visual Arts

Art is what takes over when words fail to communicate.

Madelaine, Counselor

The Visual Arts major is offered both Session 1 & Session 2

Beginning Sugarloaf artists receive considerable guidance on fundamental drawing techniques and will also be able to choose their area of interest from several challenging and fun mediums.

More experienced artists are able to work in the projects that are presented to the class but may also choose to do independent study within the medium of their choice.

Campers enrolled in the Visual Arts major should also select an elective.
We want you to learn as much as possible from your week at camp and to use what you have learned after you leave. To this end, we make sure that ample, good quality art materials are on hand, but all students will need to bring the following essential supplies to camp:
  • A good sketchbook with a min. of 50 pages of at least 8 1/2 x 11 inches in size
  • One 2B. and two HB drawing pencils
  • Two kneaded art erasers

Additionally, bring any other drawing medium you particularly like, whether that is pastels, marking pens, or prismacolor pencils. Students wishing to draw a lot in color should bring ample supplies of that medium.

NOTE: As in all years, some drawing projects may rely on reference materials. If you have interesting photos, images or text that you have an attachment to, please bring them to camp and perhaps they will provide a seed of inspiration for one of your projects.

Visual Arts at Sugarloaf are for students with a strong interest in visual expression, a willingness to work hard, an open mind to new ideas and techniques, and a love for turning their ideas into art.

Daily progress toward drawing competencies is required of all students. Topics such as proportion, shape, composition, shading, portraiture, and creating space will likely be covered as part of group sessions every morning.

Please Note:
For the final Program on Saturday, all Photography, Textile Arts, Video Arts, and Visual Arts campers are expected to remain on site and should not remove projects prior to the completion of the final performance.
