Since 1959, Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp has been a cornerstone of summer arts education for students in El Dorado County. What began as a small music-focused program called El Dorado County Fine Arts Camp in South Lake Tahoe, has grown into a beloved institution with a rich history and diverse arts offerings.
Over the years, the camp has undergone several name changes and moved locations, from South Lake Tahoe to Sonora, Sugarloaf Station near Kyburz, Camp White Meadows near Ice House Lake, and school sites like Markham School and Union Mine High School.
Since 1991, Sugarloaf has found its home at the Sly Park Outdoor Education Center in Pollock Pines, where it continues to thrive each summer. Through all these changes, the camp has stayed true to its community roots and cherished traditions.
Although Sugarloaf began as a music camp, it has evolved into a distinctive arts experience for youth, offering programs in music, drama, art, photography, and more. It’s a place where creativity flourishes, lifelong friendships are formed, and a sense of belonging is at the heart of the camp’s long-standing values.
Many campers grow up to return as staff members, inspired to give back to the camp that helped shape their passions and authentic selves. This unique culture of support and encouragement keeps the Sugarloaf community coming back year after year, weaving the camp into the memories of generations of students and staff members alike.
