We want you to learn as much as possible from your week at camp and to use what you have learned after you leave. To this end, we make sure that ample, good quality art materials are on hand, but all students will need to bring the following essential supplies to camp:

Additionally, bring any other drawing medium you particularly like, whether that is pastels, marking pens, or prismacolor pencils. Students wishing to draw a lot in color should bring ample supplies of that medium.
NOTE: As in all years, some drawing projects may rely on reference materials. If you have interesting photos, images or text that you have an attachment to, please bring them to camp and perhaps they will provide a seed of inspiration for one of your projects.

Check your camera over to see that it is functioning properly and make sure that batteries are fully charged. If you have a flash, bring it along and be sure to have fresh batteries in the flash. Bring any other accessories or lenses you have so you can learn how to use them! Black & White film can be hard to track down these days, so we will sell B&W film at camp for only $5 per roll. Bring enough money to buy at least 5 rolls.

  • Black & White Photography: 35mm film cameras with adjustable aperture and shutter speed are preferred. You may be able to find one used by checking around – students without a 35mm film camera can reserve one by contacting the Photography Program Director: John Echols, 530-913-5457. We will sell rolls of film for $5 each at the first class. Bring cash or checks to EDCOE, Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp. If you buy your own film, Ilford Delta 400, T-MAX 400, Tri-X 400 are recommended. If you purchase your own film before camp, be sure to NOT purchse Kodak BW-100 CN, BW-400 CN, or any other “black and white” film that is processed as color film (C41 processing). Look carefully at the label. A combination of 400 and 100/125 speed is recommended. At least five (5) 24-exposure rolls of black and white film.

Bring your creativity and enthusiasm for learning new skills and growing in your current ones. The Textile Arts staff and I are looking forward to a great week of Sugarloaf-style creating.
We are still finalizing our projects for this year, so we will send any important information or equipment needs in an email soon.
See you in July! –P.S. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email Susan Musker at: smusker1@gmail.com

Theater

Auditions for Theater majors will be held the first day of each camp session, immediately after you register and drop off your belongings in your cabin or tent. Report to the gym for your audition. You will need your prepared monologue at this time. Monologues are used to determine your current level of ability. Please come prepared!

For Auditions, please prepare a memorized monologue, approximately one minute in length, which demonstrates your level of ability. A monologue is usually defined as one person speaking aloud; often a character’s thoughts or something said to another person, no poems or phone conversations. No original “I just wrote this” monologues please. You may be cut off in the middle of your monologue if it is too long.

In addition, please bring the following supplies to camp:

  • Two labeled, sharpened pencils

For costume purposes, please bring:

  • One solid color shirt without logo, rhinestones or designs
  • One black shirt without logo, rhinestones or designs
  • One white shirt without logo, rhinestones or designs
(Eg., t-shirts, blouses or shirts. Not tube tops, etc.)

Video

Video students can bring a video camera but it is not required. Make sure that batteries are charged; bring back-up batteries, charging and computer connector cords and video media (tapes). You may also want to bring a pen or pencil and a journal to write down your ideas. You will be contacted closer to camp with further details.

Music Production and Recording

Throughout the week, you will be working on recording/production projects on your own and in groups. Guided exploration in various areas of production is available to you based on personal preference and interest.

As such, you are encouraged to bring whatever instruments and microphones you have, as well as any sound effects/hardware/midi controllers you would like to explore to the major.

We will have microphones & stands, computers, audio interfaces, basic midi keyboards, and headphones available. (Feel free to bring your own headphones if you have a pair you like.)

Please clearly label anything that you bring to camp with your name and number BEFORE you arrive at Sugarloaf. If you don’t, you run the risk of it being packed away with Sugarloaf’s equipment.

If you have any questions about material/equipment you would like to use in class, or if you are not sure how it would integrate into the workstations, do not hesitate to contact Max Hayes by email (maxhayespersonal@gmail.com).
